Endosulfan and Tributyl Tin Compounds recommended for inclusion in the Rotterdam (PIC) Convention

Bern, 23.03.2007 - The Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade recommended the inclusion of Endosulfan and tributyl tin compounds in the Convention.

This decision was taken at the third meeting of the Committee in Rome from 20-23 March 2007.

Endosulfan is a relatively old active component of plant protection agents, and it is to be included in the Rotterdam Convention on the grounds that it poses risks for the environment and for human health. Tributyl tin compounds are biocides, which present a danger for aquatic organisms, particularly through their widespread use in anti-fouling paints for ships and boats. In Switzerland, these compounds may not be put on the market as protection agents in paints and varnishes or for process water.

Should the Conference of the Parties vote to include these substances in the Convention, countries will have to agree in advance before importing them.
