Briefing on the status of future Swiss climate change policy
Bern, 18.02.2009 - The contracting parties to the Kyoto Protocol are called on to provide information in February 2009 relating to reduction targets for the time after 2012. Switzerland has not yet fixed any binding targets. For the time being, therefore, it will inform the Secretariat of the Kyoto Protocol of the current state of affairs in climate change policy and of the consultation proceedings on the revision of the CO2 Law.
In preparation for the UN World Climate Change Conference in December 2009 in Copenhagen the contracting states to the Kyoto Protocol are requested to report their greenhouse gas reduction targets for the second period of the Kyoto Protocol (starting in 2013) by February 2009.
In its meeting of 18 February 2009 the Federal Council acknowledged the report that was given by the DETEC to the Secretariat of the Kyoto Protocol. According to this report, Switzerland can at the present time solely give information to the international community on the stage reached in the further development of Swiss climate change policy for the time after 2012.
In this publication:
- both variants of the CO2 Law revision which are currently under discussion are presented,
- the Swiss conditions and democratic processes are explained,
- it is stated that Switzerland also anticipates for the time after 2012 the availability of emissions certificates with which climate targets can be achieved in part.
