Chinese-Swiss Workshop on "Water Management and Flood Protection"

Bern, 23.11.2009 - The workshop of 20 November 2009, which took place in Beijing, provided an opportunity for the two countries to exchange experience in the areas of water management and hazard prevention. Switzerland was represented by the Vice Director of the FOEN Andreas Götz. Minister Chen Lei participated on behalf of the host country.

In association with the agreement on closer cooperation between the two countries in the area of water management, which was signed by Federal Councillor Moritz Leuenberger and the Chinese Minister of Water Resources, Chen Lei, on 19 April 2009, a workshop involving over 70 experts from both countries was held in Beijing. Concrete issues in the area of water management, for example, glacial lakes, accommodating environmental concerns in the management of dams and adaptation to climate change, were discussed in response to the expert presentations.

The next workshop will take place in autumn 2010 in Switzerland.
