President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf will not participate in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro

Bern, 18.06.2012 - Due to the developments in Europe, several heads of state and heads of government will not participate or only briefly participate in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro. The President of the Swiss Confederation will thus not be able to keep planned meetings with heads of state and heads of government. President Widmer-Schlumpf has thus decided not to travel to Rio de Janeiro. Switzerland will be represented at the Rio+20 conference by Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard.

The commitment to sustainable development is a top priority for Switzerland. President Widmer-Schlumpf fully supports the objectives of the Rio+20 conference which renews and strengthens commitment to sustainable development.

Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard, Head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) will represent Switzerland in her capacity as specialist minister in Rio de Janeiro. She will also give the official speech for Switzerland in the Plenary Meeting and will take part in other meetings.

President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf will stay in Switzerland where she will provide representation in important financial policy business.
