A Swiss idea behind a new global climate technology network

Bern, 08.12.2012 - Participants at the Doha Climate Change Conference have agreed on December 8th 2012 to assist developing countries with a global climate network supported by UNIDO, the UN Industrial Development Organisation. At the heart of this initiative is the SECO-supported Cleaner Production programme.

The mechanism for transferring climate technology to developing nations was further addressed at this year's Climate Change Conference in Doha. From a total of nine contenders, a consortium of partner institutions including UNIDO was selected to manage a global Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN).

This initiative will draw on the UNIDO-supported network of national Cleaner Production Centres (CPCs), serving as advisory centres in over 40 countries. CPCs were originally devised by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and have been part of economic development cooperation since 1997 in close partnership with UNIDO.

Backed by Swiss expertise, Cleaner Production Centres advise small and medium-sized enterprises on lowering their consumption of energy, water and other raw materials. This helps them to become more productive and competitive and, at the same time, minimise their impact on climate change.

SECO also participated in the launch of such a Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) project in Indonesia earlier in 2012. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of greenhouse gases. Increasing the efficiency of resources in industry offers potential for lowering carbon emissions by 20 to 30 percent.
