BFE director travelling to Abu Dhabi and Azerbaijan

Bern, 08.01.2013 - Walter Steinmann, Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, will visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Azerbaijan from 13-17 January 2013. In Abu Dhabi (UAE), he will represent Switzerland at the third session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and participate in the international World Future Energy Summit 2013 together with a delegation from Swiss cleantech and energy research companies. Subsequently, Director Steinmann will travel to Baku (Azerbaijan) to scheduled discussions with decision-makers from politics and the economy. The Federal Council has conferred the title of Secretary of State on Walter Steinmann for the duration of the trip.

In addition to participating at the third session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency IRENA (13/14 January 2013), Walter Steinmann will also attend the opening plenary of the World Future Energy Summit WFES 2013 (15-17 January 2013). On the margin of the WFES 2013, he will meet a number of high-ranking officials from the UAE and other countries for bilateral discussions. A delegation drawn from Swiss cleantech and energy research companies will accompany Walter Steinmann in Abu Dhabi.

After leaving Abu Dhabi, Director Steinmann will travel to Baku (Azerbaijan), where he will conduct discussions with decision-makers from politics and the economy on 16 and 17 January 2013. Azerbaijan is strategically important to Switzerland's foreign energy policy. In the first half of 2013 the government of Azerbaijan will decide whether the contract for the construction of the transport infrastructure for a new gas delivery corridor from Azerbaijan to Europe will be awarded to the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), a project which has the support of the government of Switzerland.
