Best of Swiss Web 2014: map viewer Swiss Geoportal distinguished with four awards

Wabern, 04.04.2014 - On 3trd April 2014 map.geo.admin.ch, the map viewer of the geoportal of the Swiss Confederation has achieved at «Best of Swiss Web 2014» the 2nd rank in the categories «Technlogy» and «Publique affairs», the 3trd rank in the category «Mobile web» and the 4th rank in the nomination for the Master Award. Those awards habe been issued by the Swiss Internet Industry Association and Netzmedien AG and honor Web- and Mobil-technologies regarding transparency and quality standards in Switzerland.

The new version of map application map3.geo.admin.ch is part of the Swiss Geoportal which has already received several awards in the past. As an e-gov initiative it brings complex map content quickly and device-independent to the public.

High performance
In the citation for the prize the jury praises the mobile optimized map viewer, which combines innovation, creativity and increased efficiency: "The responsive and highly interactive website loads amazingly fast. It fulfills its core functions, such as navigation, zoom and correct positioning on the map . It can easily compete with other online map providers". The implementation of the federal geoinformation strategy based on consistent use of open source software, open standards and cloud computing is so far recognized as exemplary project for Switzerland.

Cutting edge technology
With the implementation of the new version of the map viewer, the centre of competence for the Swiss Confederation, the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo was commissioned. The successful implementation based on the decision of swisstopo to replace the previous version  by rebuilding from scratch: open and modern web standards (HTML5, CSS3, WebGL) and modern open source software components (OpenLayers3, AngularJS, bootstrap) were used. This choice made it possible to optimize the performance, ease of use and operating costs of the application.

A priorized project of eGovernment Switzerland
geo.admin.ch is a high priority project of the Swiss eGovernment program. The goal of eGovernment is to enable both businesses and  citizens to carry out important transactions with the authorities electronically. The authorities in turn are called upon to modernize their business processes and communicate electronically with each other. The exchange of geodata is fostered by geo.admin.ch in a significant way. The Federal geoportal is operated by the Federal Office of Topography, swisstopo, on behalf of the coordinating body for Federal geographical information (GSG) with the aim to implement the Geoinformation Act (GeoIG). The purpose of this Act is to ensure that geodata relating to the territory of the Swiss Confederation is made available to the Federal, Cantonal and municipal authorities, to industry and commerce, to academic and scientific institutions and to society at large, for the broadest possible use, in a sustainable, up-to-date, rapid and easy way, with the required quality and at reasonable cost (GeoIG Art. 1).
