Farm structure census 2013 – The number of agricultural holdings continues to fall

Neuchâtel, 29.07.2014 - (FSO) - According to the latest results from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of agricultural holdings fell again in 2013 to 55,207 units (-2.4% compared with the previous year) whereas the utilised agricultural area remained stable (-0.1%). The number of people working in agriculture, employing mainly family members, declined by 1.9% compared with 2012. Animal production was characterised by a boom in the poultry sector, stability in the bovine livestock population and a decline in the number of pigs.
