Population by migration status – One third of the population has a migration background

Neuchâtel, 22.01.2015 - (FSO) - In 2013, 2.4 million of the 6.8 million people aged 15 or more living in Switzerland had a migration background. Four-fifths of them were born abroad; the remaining fifth were born in Switzerland but to parents who were born abroad. Over a third (35%) held a Swiss passport. This younger population is slowing down the ageing of the resident population in Switzerland. These results and others come from the Federal Statistical Office's (FSO) study on the migration status of the permanent resident population.
