Federal Council in favour of Kazakhstan joining the Swiss constituency in the IMF/World Bank
Bern, 21.07.2010 - The Federal Council is in favour of Kazakhstan being included the Swiss constituency in the IMF and World Bank. It has responded favourably to an expression of interest by Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan declared an interest in joining the Swiss constituency in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. During a conference call yesterday, the Federal Council stated that it was in favour of Kazakhstan's inclusion. The membership will formally be completed when the IMF and World Bank Executive Directors are elected in the autumn.
With the new member, the standing of Switzerland's constituency with a geographical and thematic focus on Central Asian countries will be further enhanced. The Central Asian countries Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are already represented in the Swiss constituency. The inclusion of Kazakhstan will thus round off the constituency in geographical terms. As a result, the constituency's position will be strengthened in the governance reform under way in the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWI).
Kazakhstan has been part of the Swiss constituency in the Global Environment Facility (GEF) since 2003.
