EuroCloud Award 2013: Swiss Geoportal leads the way on international level
Bern, 17.10.2013 - On 15th October 2013 geo.admin.ch, the geoportal of the Swiss Confederation has achieved the 2nd place in the EuroCloud Award 2013 in the category of «Best Cloud Service Use Case Public Sector». This award honors the most innovative cloud solution characterized by originality, innovation, creativity and efficiency. At the same time a new release of mobile map viewer offers better support for smartphones / tablets and preset map themes allow the user to find answers related to daily life or federal offices with a selection of datasets of the Swiss Confederation.
The award «Best Cloud Service Use Case Public Sector» is a distinction which recognizes especially the fast efficiency improvements and significant cost reductions which were achieved by geo.admin.ch using cloud services during both the project and operational phase. The jury was convinced by the consequently applied strategy in order to minimize cloud provider vendor lock-in. This has been accomplished by the systematic use of open standards, open source software and automation of IT processes:. a prerequisite to ensure the seamless transition from conventional enterprise IT infrastructure to the cloud.
Mobile access to federal geodata simplified
The Confederation's geo-data portal is very popular: the map viewer alone attracts up to 12,000 users a day. With an update of the mobile map viewer to the latest web technologies access becomes even simpler: smartphones and tablets are supported with the same website. New preset map themes allow fast access to themes like broadband internet availability, geology or mobile transmitter antennas. The service will continuously extended.
A priorized project of eGovernment Switzerland
geo.admin.ch is a high priority project of the Swiss eGovernment program. The goal of eGovernment is to enable both businesses and citizens to carry out important transactions with the authorities electronically. The authorities in turn are called upon to modernize their business processes and communicate electronically with each other. The exchange of geodata is fostered by geo.admin.ch in a significant way. The Federal geoportal is operated by the Federal Office of Topography, swisstopo, on behalf of the coordinating body for Federal geographical information (GSG).
