Geo.admin.ch, the federal geoportal, wins prize for the use of open source software

Bern, 09.10.2014 - Out of 23 applicants the Federal geoportal received the Open Source Software Award 2014. The prize was awarded by the Swiss Open Systems User Group / ch / open on October 8, 2014.

The implementation of the geoinformation act based on the consequent adoption of open source software, open standards and cloud was rewarded. The innovative use of currently available technical possibilities was thus appreciated. For the implementation of the new version of the map viewer map.geo.admin.ch latest web standards (HTML5, CSS3, WebGL) were used in combination with open source software components (OpenLayers3, AngularJS, bootstrap). This choice makes it possible simplify the use, optimize the performance and operating costs of the application.

The Open Source Software Awards honor companies, public entities, open source communities and individuals who have acted boldly and in an innovative way by developing or using open source software in a variety of ways.

Usage and exchange of geodata is fostered by geo.admin.ch in a significant way. The Federal geoportal is operated by the Federal Office of Topography, swisstopo, on behalf of the coordinating body for Federal geographical information (GSG) with the aim to implement the Geoinformation Act (GeoIG). The purpose of this Act is to ensure that geodata relating to the territory of the Swiss Confederation is made available to the Federal, Cantonal and municipal authorities, to industry and commerce, to academic and scientific institutions and to society at large, for the broadest possible use, in a sustainable, up-to-date, rapid and easy way, with the required quality and at reasonable cost (GeoIG Art. 1).
