Those awards have been issued by the swissICT, the most important representative of the ICT-workplace Siwtzerland and at the same time the biggest professional association of the industry.

In the citation for the prize, the independent and interdisciplinary SwissICT jury praises the high significance of the map viewer in the ICT-industry and thus the importance for a successful Swiss industry.
The Swiss ICT awards are known to be one of most significant awards in computer and communication technology in Switzerland. These awards foster entrepreneurial activity and acceptance of ICT entrepreneurs in Swiss society. The distinguished enterprises are meant to act as examples and motivation for the whole ICT-industry.

Cutting edge webstandards and open source software

The implementation of the geoinformation act is based on the consequent adoption of open source software, open standards and cloud computing. With the implementation of the new version of the map viewer, the centre of competence for the Swiss Confederation, the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo was commissioned. The successful implementation based on the decision of swisstopo to replace the previous version  by rebuilding from scratch: open and modern web standards (HTML5, CSS3, WebGL) and modern open source software components (OpenLayers3, AngularJS, bootstrap) were used. This choice made it possible to optimize the performance, ease of use and operating costs of the application.

A priorized project of eGovernment Switzerland

geo.admin.ch is a high priority project of the Swiss eGovernment program. The goal of eGovernment is to enable both businesses and  citizens to carry out important transactions with the authorities electronically. The authorities in turn are called upon to modernize their business processes and communicate electronically with each other. The exchange of geodata is fostered by geo.admin.ch in a significant way. The Federal geoportal is operated by the Federal Office of Topography, swisstopo, on behalf of the coordinating body for Federal geographical information (GSG) with the aim to implement the Geoinformation Act (GeoIG). The purpose of this Act is to ensure that geodata relating to the territory of the Swiss Confederation is made available to the Federal, Cantonal and municipal authorities, to industry and commerce, to academic and scientific institutions and to society at large, for the broadest possible use, in a sustainable, up-to-date, rapid and easy way, with the required quality and at reasonable cost (GeoIG Art. 1).
