1.5% decrease in supplementary accommodation in 2024

Neuchâtel, 19.06.2025 — Supplementary accommodation recorded 17.3 million overnight stays in 2024. In comparison with the preceding year, this represents a decrease of 1.5%. Demand from foreign visitors increased by 3.7% to 5.8 million. In contrast, the number of overnight stays by domestic guests fell to 11.5 million (–3.9%). These are some of the definitive findings from the Supplementary Accommodation Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

When added to the hotel statistics, these findings provide an overall balance for the tourist accommodation in Switzerland. In 2024, 60.1 million overnight stays were registered in Switzerland, corresponding to an increase of 1.4% compared with 2023. In 2024, domestic visitors registered 32.4 million overnight stays (–1.4% compared with 2023), foreign visitors 27.8 million (+4.8%).

Fewer Swiss guests but more foreign visitors in holiday homes

In 2024, commercially-run holiday homes accounted for the majority of overnight stays in supplementary accommodation (40.8%). With an annual total of 7.1 million overnight stays, demand fell by 2.2% compared with 2023. Domestic demand declined by 6.9% and reached 4.2 million overnight stays. Demand from foreign visitors increased by 5.5% to 2.9 million overnight stays. Guests from Europe (2.3 million /+4.5%) generated 79.0% of the overnight stays by foreign visitors.

In 2024, the average length of stay in commercially-run holiday homes was 6.0 nights. Spread over the seven major regions, demand was strongest in the Lake Geneva region with 2.6 million overnight stays.

Collective accommodation figures stable

At 5.4 million, the number of overnight stays in collective accommodation in 2024 remained at the same level as in 2023.

In 2024, domestic guests accounted for 4.4 million overnight stays, corresponding to a decrease of 0.3%. Foreign visitors (75.8% of whom came from Europe), registered 1.0 million overnight stays (+0.7%). The average length of stay in collective accommodation was 2.5 nights. With 1.5 million overnight stays, Eastern Switzerland was the most popular major region.

Fewer overnight stays at campsites

The number of overnight stays at campsites fell by 2.0% to 4.8 million. The increase in foreign demand (+2.7% to 1.9 million) did not make up for the decrease (–4.8%) in domestic customers (2.9 million).

At 96.2%, guests from Europe accounted for the largest share of foreign demand. The average length of stay in 2024 was 2.9 overnight stays. With 1.2 million overnight stays, the Espace Mittelland was the major region with the greatest number of overnight stays at campsites, followed by the Lake Geneva region (1.0 million).
