US tariffs: Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter and Vice President Guy Parmelin to travel to Washington
Bern, 05.08.2025 — The President of the Swiss Confederation, Karin Keller-Sutter, and the Vice President of the Federal Council, Guy Parmelin, are to fly to the United States on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, to facilitate meetings with the US authorities at short notice and hold talks with a view to improving the tariff situation for Switzerland.
During its extraordinary meeting on 4 August 2025, the Federal Council reaffirmed that it was keen to pursue talks with the United States on the tariff situation. For this reason, Karin Keller-Sutter, President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Finance, together with Guy Parmelin, Vice President of the Federal Council and Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, are to travel to Washington on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.
The Federal President and Vice President will be accompanied by a small delegation, to include Helene Budliger Artieda, State Secretary for Economic Affairs (SECO), and Daniela Stoffel, State Secretary for International Finance (SIF). The aim is to present a more attractive offer to the United States in a bid to lower the level of reciprocal tariffs for Swiss exports, taking US concerns into account.
The Federal Council will issue a statement as soon as there are any relevant developments for the public.
