Almost a quarter of a century ago, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1325, which recognises the role of women in all aspects of peace and security and calls for the protection of women's rights. At the beginning of October, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for the comprehensive, equal and effective participation of women in peace processes. Switzerland supports this ‘common pledge’ and will adopt it.

The debate on women, peace and security is held every October. This year it falls during Switzerland's second presidency of the UN Security Council (first presidency in May 2023). During its month as president, Switzerland will have the opportunity to focus on greater participation of women in peacebuilding and mediation and to provide the Council with impetus for its action. ‘Promoting sustainable peace’ is one of Switzerland's thematic priorities during its two-year term as a member of the UN Security Council in 2023–24.

During her stay in New York, Ms Amherd, in her capacity as president of the Swiss Confederation and head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) will also attend the presentation of a UN study co-financed by Switzerland on equal opportunities for women in the defence sector. During its month-long presidency, Switzerland will also present a book containing a collection of letters from experienced female mediators in peace processes to their younger colleagues.
