Swiss resident population exceeds 9 million in 2024 despite a decline in births

Neuchâtel, 3.4.2025 - The Swiss population passed the 9 million mark in 2024. On 31 December, there were 9 048 900 permanent residents. The fertility rate fell for the third year in a row. The average number of children per woman is at an all-time low. The number of deaths remained stable and life expectancy continues to rise. Immigration fell sharply after a record year in 2023, while emigration has risen. These are some of the provisional annual results for 2024 from the Population and Household Statistics and Vital Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
