Official re-opening of the Gotthard road tunnel
Bern, 18.12.2001 - An official ceremony will be held late this Friday afternoon to mark the re-opening of the Gotthard tunnel to road traffic. The tunnel will be open initially to cars and then, from 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, to heavy goods vehicles. As an extra safety precaution, HGVs will now be restricted to a single lane and will be required to maintain a minimum distance between them. Meanwhile, the pass itself will remain open so long as the weather permits. The rolling highway (ROLA) service between Brunnen and Lugano-Verdeggio will continue to operate in accordance with demand. However, the SBB road-rail service on the Gotthard will cease at 16:00 when the tunnel is re-opened.
