International congress on natural hazards: Switzerland hosts Interpraevent 2016

Bern, 23.05.2016 - Interpraevent 2016, this year‘s international congress on natural hazards, takes place from 30 May to 2 June in Switzerland. The congress is one of the key global events in the field of natural hazards. It will be opened by Marc Chardonnens, Director of the FOEN, and Margareta Wahlström, who was Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) until 2015.

Over 500 experts will convene in the KKL Lucerne to exchange the latest insights from research and practice at Interpraevent 2016. The theme of the congress is "Living with Natural Risks". The topics covered by the presentations include hazard and risk assessment, crisis management, governance and strategies in dealing with risks, and data surveying and modelling. Participants will be able to observe Switzerland's approach to natural hazard management during various excursions.

This year's Interpraevent congress is organised on behalf of Switzerland by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the canton of Lucerne. Robert Küng, Lucerne Cantonal Councillor and Head of the canton's Building, Environment and Economics Department, and Adrian Borgula, Lucerne City Councillor, will also take part in the keynote session. The research society INTERPRAEVENT, which is based in Austria, holds congresses every four years in Europe and every four years in-between in Asia. Last staged in Switzerland in 1992, the 2016 congress returns to the country this year. The media are invited to participate in the congress, particularly the keynote session and excursions:
